Labour members protest at Rishi Sunak's offices

Richmond (Yorkshire) Labour party turned out to back a protest organised by Unite the Union, outside Rishi Sunak’s Northallerton constituency office.

‘Unite Community’ delivered a letter signed by 75 local organisations in protest at the removal of the £20 uplift to Universal credit. The protest was supported by a sizeable group, including members of the local Labour party who issued a statement in support of the protest;

“Richmond Labour Party wholeheartedly supports Unite Community’s demonstration outside the Constituency Offices of our MP and Chancellor, Rishi Sunak.

The cut to Universal Credit will impact 15% of families in the constituency, many of those families working insecure jobs, with long hours on low wages. That’s 5,840 families who are losing an important part of their income.

“On top of this, those families will be further hit in the spring by an increase in National Insurance, taxing the lowest paid workers the greatest portion of their income

“These disgraceful decisions show how out of touch the Chancellor is with the lives of ordinary people in our Constituency, many of whom are already facing a sharp hike in bills this winter.”

The protest has been widely reported in the local media:
